Cowboys, Western history and Hollywood “myth making” at Reagan Library

A popular exhibit at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum in Simi Valley lets the public to be immersed in the world of cowboys and Western history. In a prepared statement the Library said, “Discover how the cowboy — once a rugged laborer driving cattle across unforgiving terrain — became a larger-than-life legend symbolizing strength, self-reliance and freedom.”

Among other items, visitors can see rare photographs, historic artifacts and “costumes from classic Western films.” One of the most popular exhibits gives visitors a chance to pick up a replica rifle that uses light to electronically knock down targets.

Melissa Giller, chief marketing office for the Ronald Reagan Foundation and Institute said the exhibition merges into “the Hollywood and silver screen story of the cowboy, from costumes and props, objects all the way to Roy Rogers and Dales Evans’ actual horses and dog that was taxidermied.”

Among the authentic items on display are a fur jacket worn by President Theodore Roosevelt; a Robinson R22 helicopter with the Ronald Reagan Rancho del Cielo Brand–the same type of helicopter used by modern cowboys to round up cattle; a .22 caliber revolver once owned by Roosevelt; Reagan’s red 1953 Willys Jeep CJ-6 from Rancho del Cielo, Reagan’s former ranch near Santa Barbara, and a Winchester Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle once owned by Buffalo Bill’s Wild West shows.
