A special tribunal in Bangladesh has sentenced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to death in absentia, convicting her on multiple charges of crimes against humanity linked to the 2024 student uprising.
The verdict was delivered by the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) in Dhaka, marking one of the most significant and controversial rulings in the countryâs political history.
Sheikh Hasina, who ruled Bangladesh for more than 15 years, was ousted from power in 2024 amid massive anti-government protests led by students. Following her removal, she fled to India, where she has remained in exile.
The court stated that the governmentâs response under her leadership resulted in the deaths of numerous civilians and constituted crimes against humanity under international law.
From exile, Sheikh Hasina rejected the verdict, calling the tribunal politically motivated and claiming she was denied a fair defense. She described the ruling as âbiasedâ and âa violation of justice.â
The ruling is expected to deepen political tensions across Bangladesh.
